In the Level 5 fire disaster that occurred in Hong Kong's Tai Po Hong Fuk Estate, many innocent lives were tragically lost, including heroic firefighters who died in the line of duty. We express our deepest condolences and extend our sincerest sympathies to the families of the victims. May the deceased rest in peace, and may the injured recover soon, so that this painful lesson is forever remembered.
In this tragedy, the victims included not only humans but also pets. After smoke exposure, pets may experience respiratory discomfort, coughing, or lung dryness. If these symptoms occur, the priority is to take the pet to a veterinary clinic for treatment. Additionally, providing appropriate hydration and nutritional support is an important way to alleviate these discomforts. Below are several soup recipes we have compiled and designed, hoping to help pets in need.

Recommended Soup Recipes The following three soup recipes are designed based on nutritional science and are suitable for pets' lung-moistening needs after smoke exposure. All recipes involve boiling to reduce bacterial risks and are low-calorie, suitable for pets' digestive systems.
- Pear, Apple, and Carrot Soup (Top Recommendation) This recipe combines the lung-moistening effects of pears, the vitamin supplementation from apples, and the phlegm-resolving action of carrots. Research shows that pears are rich in pectin, which can alleviate respiratory inflammation; carrots' β-carotene aids in antioxidation and immune regulation. • Ingredients: 1 duck pear or snow pear (peeled, cored, and chopped); 1 apple (cored and chopped); half a carrot (peeled and chopped). • Preparation: Place all ingredients in a pot, add about 1.2 liters of water. Bring to a boil over high heat, then simmer on low for 1-1.5 hours. Thoroughly strain out the solids, taking only the clear golden soup. Cool to room temperature before feeding. • Benefits: Generates fluids and moistens dryness, resolves phlegm and stops cough, suitable for dryness symptoms caused by smoke.
- Carrot, Water Chestnut, and Pear Water (Clearing Heat and Moistening Lungs) This recipe targets lung heat caused by smoke, with water chestnuts providing a heat-clearing effect and carrots offering β-carotene to support immunity. • Ingredients: Half a carrot (peeled and chopped); 5-6 water chestnuts (peeled and washed); 1 snow pear (peeled, cored, and chopped). • Preparation: Same as above, simmer the ingredients for 1 hour, then strain to obtain the soup. • Benefits: Clears heat and generates fluids, moistens lungs and resolves phlegm, particularly suitable for heat-related discomfort.
- Simple Chicken and Vegetable Broth (Supplementing Nutrition and Hydration) If the pet has poor appetite, this soup can provide protein and hydration. Chicken breast is a low-fat protein source. • Ingredients: 1 piece of chicken breast (about 100-150 grams, unseasoned); a few pieces of carrot (or substitute with apple/pear). • Preparation: Blanch the chicken breast to remove blood foam, then add to water with carrots, bring to a boil, and simmer on low for 40 minutes to 1 hour. Strain out solids, let cool, and skim off oil. Feed only the clear broth, or mix shredded chicken into main food. • Benefits: Supplements hydration and protein, gently stimulates appetite.
Cooking Notes:
- No Seasoning: Do not add salt, sugar, or oil to prevent electrolyte imbalance or obesity issues, in line with pet kidney health research (such as the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine).
- Feeding Method: Feed only the clear soup, filtering out all solid residues. Start with small amounts (10-20ml/kg body weight daily), observe the pet's reaction, and if vomiting or diarrhea occurs, stop immediately and consult a veterinarian.
